I'm Josiah Davis, owner and chief editor of JD Book Services. I started editing professionally ten years ago after a friend had me take a look at one of his manuscripts, but due to the overwhelming response I received I transitioned into editing full-time. Since then, I have worked on over six hundred published projects for self-published/indie authors and small presses alike. To me, the absolute most important thing within editing is finding that balance between the author’s voice and clarity of writing. Many editors out there think you can keep the same cookie-cutter template on how to edit, project after project, and that’s just not true. Maintaining the author’s voice while making the book flow clearly is paramount, and that’s where I focus my efforts. There is no one-size-fits-all formula for editing. You put in a huge amount of effort in writing your book, and I’m here to do the same thing so we can really make your book shine.

I have been a writer and compulsive editor for as long as I can remember, and this near-obsession with words has taught me the power of well-crafted communication. I am also an avid reader, and I truly enjoy a neatly turned phrase. All of this translates into careful, effective copyediting that makes your manuscript shine.
I’m a writer myself, so I know what it means to hand your precious manuscript over to someone else. Not to worry - as your creative collaborator I respect your authorial voice and vision, and we’ll work together to get your manuscript reader-ready. Your audience is waiting, and together we can deliver what they most want to read.
I have completed the Professional Editing Standards Certification program through Queen’s University, Kingston.

My goal is to cultivate a friendly and professional relationship with my authors. If I'm doing my job right, my influence on the manuscript should be near invisible. I celebrate writing that breaks the rules and take an unfussy editing approach. I am not a hard-nose, judgey grammarian who wields grammar guides like weapons (though I do reference the Chicago Manual of Style religiously).
My favorite books to read generally fall into literary fiction and speculative fiction genres, though I can find something to appreciate about most genres. I'm one of those "nose stuck in the book, will read anything" kind of people.
My professional background is in behavioral healthcare, and I pursued continuing education in editing and proofreading, both of which I've demonstrated my competency through the completion of certificate programs.
I am a member of the Editorial Freelancer Association, ACES: The Society for Editing, and the Northwest Editors Guild.

I believe there’s nothing like the collaborative effort of working with an indie author to bring a new book to its readers. I have a Certificate in Editing from Poynter University/ACES and passed the Publishing Training Centre’s proofreading course with distinction, but my favorite training was attending the Writers’ Police Academy, where I took hands-on courses taught by law enforcement, EMTs, firefighters, and scientists that help with realism and fact-checking.
I'm a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and a member of the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA), where I serve as the Michigan chapter coordinator. I've worked for large and small presses and dozens of indie authors.
When not in my home state of Michigan, I can be found hiking through the woods on my family’s hundred-acre farm in West Virginia or kayaking on the lake across the street.
